Filtering microplastics: Alumni-founded startup CLEANR launches pilot on campus

CLEANR, the alumni-founded startup from Case Western Reserve University, was recently featured in the CWRU Newsroom for launching a pilot program on campus. The initiative places CLEANR’s microplastic filters in residence hall laundry rooms, allowing students to have a direct impact on reducing plastic pollution.

Developed while its founders were students at Case, CLEANR’s patented VORTX filtration system captures over 90% of microplastics as small as 50 microns before they reach waterways. CLEANR has evolved into a scalable environmental technology now entering homes around the world.

CLEANR is proud to have come from CWRU and believes Cleveland can be ground zero in the fight against microplastics. With its connection to the Great Lakes and deep roots in innovation, the city is uniquely positioned to lead the charge toward cleaner water and a cleaner future.
